Architect Alan Stanton Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at 2026 Architect of the Year Ceremony
British Architect Honored for Decades of Architectural Innovation and Public Design
LONDON — Architect Alan Stanton has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Architect of the Year Awards (AYA), held on October 7, 2026, at Convene Sancroft on Paternoster Square in London.
The annual industry ceremony, organized by architectural publication Building Design, celebrates overall practice achievement across the United Kingdom's architectural and built environment sectors. Stanton received the Lifetime Achievement Award alongside his long-standing practice partner, Paul Williams, in recognition of their decades-long contribution to British architecture.
Decades of Architectural Leadership
Stanton co-founded the London-based practice Stanton Williams in 1989 following an extensive international career in architectural design and urban masterplanning. Over nearly four decades of leadership, Stanton has directed major cultural, civic, and educational developments throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.
The award judging panel, chaired by Building Design contributing editor Ben Flatman and group technical editor Thomas Lane, cited Stanton's sustained professional commitment and the firm's enduring impact on public architecture. Organizers noted that the honor celebrates a coherent body of work defined by civic purpose, material integrity, and environmental sensitivity.
Among the key projects guided by Stanton and his practice are the Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge—which received the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize—the Marshgate building for University College London at East Bank, and the major redevelopment of the Museum of London site at West Smithfield.
Industry Celebration in London
The 2026 AYA ceremony brought together leading architectural figures, civic leaders, and design practitioners. Hosted by broadcaster Colin Murray, the event highlighted exemplar projects in housing, public buildings, and urban regeneration.
The Lifetime Achievement Award formally recognizes Stanton's legacy as both a practicing architect and a contributor to architectural discourse. Throughout his career, Stanton has served as a guest lecturer, external examiner, and advisor to public design bodies, supporting the development of future generations of architects.
