Breakthroughs in Bio-Simulation: Dr. Alan Bowling Receives JCND Best Paper Award

At the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), a research team led by Dr. Alan Bowling, Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics (JCND) Best Paper Award.

Drastically Reducing Simulation Time

Dr. Bowling’s team has successfully solved a longstanding barrier in cellular-level biological simulation. Traditionally, physics-based computational models that predict how stem cells differentiate into specific target cells (such as bone, skin, or fat cells) require massive computational power. Because of the extreme discrepancy in scale between small cellular masses and large biomechanical forces, these simulations routinely took months or even years to complete.

Dr. Bowling’s research team developed a revolutionary scaling approach that dramatically optimizes these calculations:

  • The Speedup: It reduces simulation times for a 15-day biological process of stem cell differentiation (specifically adipogenesis, or fat cell development) from several months to just over one hour on a standard desktop computer.
  • High Precision: Despite the massive reduction in time, the simulated results closely mirror physical experimental data.
  • Real-World Impact: The model helps scientists precisely predict the initial conditions required for a stem cell to successfully differentiate into the desired cell type. This capability has profound, long-term implications for tissue repair, customized skin grafts, and accelerated wound healing.

Supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the paper titled "Minimizing Computational Time for Long-Term Three-Dimensional Dynamic Simulation of Stem Cell Adipogenesis" was one of only two works selected globally for the JCND honor.


Leadership Transitions: Dr. Alan Melnick Announces Retirement After Two Decades in Public Health

In local administration and governance, Dr. Alan Melnick, the long-standing Public Health Director for Clark County, Washington, has announced his retirement. His retirement will officially take effect on August 25, 2026.

A Legacy of Crisis Management and Community Care

Dr. Melnick has been a cornerstone of Clark County’s healthcare infrastructure since joining the agency in 2006 as a health officer. In 2013, he took on the consolidated, dual responsibilities of both director and health officer.

Over his tenure, Melnick navigated several defining public health events:

  • 2019 Measles Outbreak: Dr. Melnick coordinated the regional response to one of the largest measles outbreaks in modern Washington state history, managing 71 localized cases.
  • The COVID-19 Pandemic: He led the county's public health strategy, prioritizing equitable medical outreach to vulnerable and disproportionately affected workforce populations.
  • Ongoing Vigilance: His retirement announcement coincides with the county actively addressing a recent uptick in viral activity, including 15 confirmed measles cases in the region this year.

In a farewell statement released by the County Manager's Office, Melnick reflected on his career:

"I am proud of the work Public Health has done over the years supporting the community. It has been a true pleasure working with everyone, and I look forward to following Public Health’s positive impact in Clark County in the future."
