Former SELECT Managing Director Alan Wilson Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Industry Veteran Alan Wilson Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award in Edinburgh

EDINBURGH, Scotland — Alan Wilson, the former Managing Director of SELECT, Scotland's largest construction trade association, has been awarded the organization’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The accolade, sponsored by energy technology firm Schneider Electric, recognizes Wilson's more than 40 years of service and advocacy within the Scottish construction and electrotechnical sectors.

The presentation took place during the annual SELECT President’s Lunch held at The Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh. The event was attended by senior political, business, and construction industry figures.

Over Four Decades of Sector Advocacy

Wilson retired from his role at SELECT in August 2026, concluding 12 years of service with the association, including seven years as its Managing Director. During his tenure, he was credited with shaping the organization's strategic direction and strengthening its representation across the Scottish construction landscape.

SELECT President Darren Crockett, who presented the award, highlighted Wilson’s leadership during key industry challenges, particularly his efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, Wilson spearheaded the creation of the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum. The initiative brought together diverse industry organizations to establish a unified voice, ensuring contractors' operational and financial concerns were addressed directly by government policymakers.

"Alan has been a tireless advocate for our industry throughout an exceptional career," Crockett stated during the presentation. "His knowledge, integrity, and leadership have earned him enormous respect not only across Scotland but throughout the wider construction sector".

Legacy of Regulation and Apprenticeship Support

Throughout his career, Wilson was a prominent proponent of fair payment practices, enhanced safety regulation, and professional recognition for electricians. He consistently advocated for formal apprenticeships over short-term training courses to ensure long-term competency and safety standards within the trade.

His successor as SELECT Managing Director, Sharon Miller, remarked on the enduring nature of his contribution. "Alan's contribution to SELECT has been immense," Miller said. "His leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to members have helped transform the association and strengthen its reputation across government, industry, and beyond".

Accepting the award, Wilson expressed gratitude to his peers and emphasized the collective nature of the achievement.

"While my name may be on the trophy, it really reflects the support, commitment, and hard work of the many colleagues, members, presidents, and industry partners I have had the privilege to work alongside throughout my career," Wilson said. "The construction industry has given me tremendous opportunities, and I have always believed in the importance of standing up for contractors, improving standards, and ensuring our industry has a strong and respected voice".
