Former Texas A&M Media Leader Alan Cannon Honored with 2026 CSC Lifetime Achievement Award

National Recognition for Four Decades of Athletics Communications

College Sports Communicators (CSC) has officially named former Texas A&M University athletics executive Alan Cannon as a recipient of the 2026 CSC Lifetime Achievement Award. The national accolade honors athletic communications professionals who have completed at least 25 years of full-time service in intercollegiate athletics media relations and have retired or concluded their careers in the profession.

Cannon retired from Texas A&M University in June 2025 after spending 44 years working within the university's athletics department, concluding his career as Executive Associate Athletics Director for External Operations.

Career Overview and Milestone Contributions

Cannon began his career in sports administration as a high school intern at Southern Methodist University under the guidance of veteran media relations directors. After enrolling at Texas A&M, he joined the athletic department on payroll in May 1981 as a student sports information assistant focused on the baseball program.

Upon graduating with a marketing degree in 1984, Cannon was hired full-time as an assistant sports information director in 1985. In 1989, he was promoted to lead the media relations department, overseeing publicity, media operations, and communications for all 20 Texas A&M varsity sports programs while serving as the primary communications contact for the football team. He remained in leadership over Texas A&M's athletic communications for more than 35 years until his retirement.

Professional Leadership and Legacy

Throughout his tenure in collegiate athletics, Cannon assumed leadership roles at the national level. He served in the national officer rotation for College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) and served as the organization's national president during the 2002–2003 academic year.

Prior to receiving the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, Cannon was inducted into the CSC Hall of Fame in June 2014 and received the Scoop Hudgens Lifetime Sports Information Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation in 1999.

In an official statement regarding the honor, Cannon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve intercollegiate athletics over four decades, citing the dedication of the professional colleagues, student workers, and media relations staff members with whom he collaborated throughout his tenure.

The formal presentation of the 2026 CSC Special Awards will take place during the annual College Sports Communicators national convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
