Alan Finch CBE Posthumously Awarded Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre Award

Posthumous Honor Announced Ahead of UK Theatre Awards 2026

LONDON — The late theatrical executive Alan Finch CBE has been named the posthumous recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre Award at the upcoming UK Theatre Awards 2026. The announcement, made on October 6, 2026, honors Finch’s decades-long influence on both regional and commercial theatre across the United Kingdom.

Finch’s family is scheduled to accept the award on his behalf during the annual ceremony at 8 Northumberland Avenue in London on October 12, 2026. Sponsored by Encore and hosted by La Voix, the event recognizes Finch’s significant professional legacy, coming shortly after his death in September 2026 at the age of 61.

A Career Dedicated to the Stage

Finch began his career in the performing arts as a teenage theatre electrician, eventually transitioning into production management before entering senior administrative leadership. He established his early executive reputation through management roles at major regional cultural institutions, including Nottingham Playhouse and Theatre Royal Plymouth.

In 2005, Finch joined Chichester Festival Theatre (CFT) as executive director, partnering with artistic director Jonathan Church. The duo was credited with delivering a major artistic and financial turnaround for the venue, safeguarding it from potential closure. Under their joint leadership, which spanned over a decade, CFT produced more than 100 shows—including 22 new plays—which collectively earned over 40 awards and achieved an average audience capacity of 95 percent. During this tenure, Finch also oversaw a landmark £22 million capital redevelopment of the festival theatre building.

Kathy Bourne, the current president of UK Theatre and executive director of Chichester Festival Theatre, commented on Finch's impact:

"Alan's contribution to Chichester Festival Theatre was immense; it would not be overstating it to say that, together with his long-time friend and colleague Jonathan Church, he saved the theatre from closure. Not only was he instrumental in restoring CFT to artistic and financial health, he also established its future prosperity."

West End and Global Leadership

Finch’s contributions were recognized nationally in 2015 when he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to theatre.

In 2016, he joined Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. as co-managing director. In this role, Finch oversaw major capital projects, notably managing the reconstruction and expansion of the Victoria Palace Theatre in preparation for the West End debut of the musical Hamilton.

Finch went on to manage the international expansion of the company's global productions, coordinate the continuous modernization of its portfolio of West End venues, and collaborate on the development of Music Theatre International, a leading musical theatre licensing company. He also played an instrumental role in steering the business and its personnel through the extended venue closures of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Finch served as a long-standing board member of the Society of London Theatre (SOLT), offering guidance and advocacy for the wider British theatrical sector.
