Professor Smeaton, an Emeritus Professor of Computing at Dublin City University (DCU) and founding Director of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, brings decades of world-class expertise to the oversight body.
Smeaton’s notable professional milestones include:
- Pioneering Research: Serving as a leading global authority in digital video processing, multimedia information retrieval, and lifelogging.
- National Advisory Roles: Formerly serving as an appointed member of the Irish Government's AI Advisory Council.
- Distinguished Accolades: Elected member of the Royal Irish Academy, IEEE Fellow, and recipient of the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal.
His deep familiarity with both the technical limitations and broader societal impacts of artificial intelligence will guide the board’s regulatory and innovation-focused directives.
Understanding the AI Office of Ireland’s Mandate
Established under the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026, the AI Office of Ireland is tasked with coordinating the country's national approach to artificial intelligence regulation.
The newly appointed board, chaired by former senior civil servant Mary Doyle, is responsible for:
- Enforcing Governance: Overseeing the operations of the AI Office as the central authority ensuring compliance with the phased roll-out of the EU AI Act.

- Mary Doyle (Chairperson): Former Deputy Secretary General across several government departments.
- Professor Deirdre Ahern: Professor of Law at Trinity College Dublin.
- Dr. Michelle Kearney: Lead official at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

The board will work closely alongside Paul Byrne, who was recently named the first Chief Executive Officer of the AI Office of Ireland.
