Professor Alan Thompson Appointed to Lead London’s Knowledge Quarter Board
Driving Innovation at the Heart of London
Professor Alan Thompson has been officially appointed as the new Chair of the Board for the Knowledge Quarter (KQ), Europe's largest and most prominent innovation district. Operating as one of the key strategic partnerships in central London, the Knowledge Quarter is a massive consortium that continues to draw international attention as a premier hub for cutting-edge artificial intelligence, technology, and life sciences.
Professor Thompson—who currently serves as Pro-Provost (London) and Dean of the Faculty of Brain Sciences at University College London (UCL)—assumes the leadership role effective immediately. He will be joined by newly appointed Deputy Chair Councillor Sabrina Francis of Camden Council.
What is the Knowledge Quarter?
The Knowledge Quarter is an elite consortium comprising over 80 cultural, research, scientific, and academic institutions clustered within a one-mile radius of King's Cross, Euston Road, and Bloomsbury.
Key facts about the district include:
- Unparalleled Scale: It houses approximately 400 research centres, 18,000 academic staff, and over 200 million catalogued resource items.
- World-Class Members: Founding and prominent members include Google, the British Library, UCL, Wellcome, and the Francis Crick Institute.
- Global Tech Focus: The geographical cluster has become a magnet for international technology firms, especially those working in advanced AI and frontier life sciences.
Steering the Next Phase of Growth
In his role as Chair, Professor Thompson will provide strategic leadership and governance oversight. He will collaborate closely with the executive team to champion cross-institutional partnerships and represent the consortium to industry, government, and the wider global research community.
His appointment comes at a crucial transition point as major global companies increasingly establish roots within the district, solidifying its international footprint.
"The Knowledge Quarter brings together one of the greatest concentrations of knowledge and expertise anywhere in the world, spanning everything from historic collections to frontier AI companies to cutting-edge research and innovation," said Professor Thompson upon his appointment. "It is a place where ideas connect and collaboration thrives."
A Distinguished Career in Science and Academic Leadership
Professor Thompson is widely recognized as one of the UK’s most accomplished neuroscientists and academic leaders.
- Clinical Expertise: An internationally renowned authority on Multiple Sclerosis (MS), his pioneering work utilized MRI technology to investigate the core causes of disability in MS patients.
- UCL Leadership: He was the founding Dean of UCL’s Faculty of Brain Sciences in 2011, elevating the department into a global powerhouse for neurological research.
- Accolades: A Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Thompson is the recipient of prestigious awards, including the Charcot Award—the highest international honor in multiple sclerosis research.
As UCL marks its historic 200th anniversary, the appointment of one of its most senior leaders to head the Knowledge Quarter underscores a renewed commitment to collaborative, place-based impact and innovation across London.
